Race Report by Patrick Bevin -

Race went well- Tour de Dungeness (washington cup race) I was the only Rubicon rider to take the start in the pro/1/2 (A grade essentially for those back home). The course was dead flat and we rolled around nice and quickly; it was 140km long and the feild was about 80 riders strong. Washington state has alot of teams in there races, alot of well organised teams. The poor pro riders (their was a unitedhealth and jellybelly presence) couldnt even stretch without 30 riders lined up on there wheels. Due to the nature of the course being fast and the big teams always wanting 1 more of their riders in the break nothing got away untill the very last lap. I rolled across to the break – we had 5 riders roll fairly well and stayed away to the finish. It all split with about 1.5km to go and I took the gallop. Fairly happy to go 1 from 1 on american soil!! We averaged 43kph so race was done and dusted in just over 3 hours.

Sunday was the Mason Lakes Road race # 3. Still in Washington, a bit further south and very cold!! Smaller field – only about 40 riders, 115km long and quite a cool course. It was basically false flat up a main road before bombing back down and along the lakes edge to be done 6 times. Was a bit more structured than the previous day and today there was 3 rubicon riders! Break of 2 got away after lap and a half and the field basically shut down. Omer told me that due to the 2 largest teams being represented it was over unless we did something.

Aaron and Omer then brought the gap down to something manageable then I jumped across with a few others. Fast forward 4 laps of decent rolling and I had a couple of digs prior to the finish (the break was very attentive!!) so it came down to an uphill gallop which I took out.

I am glad to know that I didn’t leave my legs (or brain) at home. Training is getting into the groove and I am heading north again saturday for round #2 of the washington cup. Followed by heading south to the Piece of Cake road race in Oregon.
